The Euro vote – Turkey shows its modern face

Turkey’s modern woman Sibel Tuzun

Turkey’s blonde bombshell Sibel Tuzun failed to win the European vote last night at the Eurovision Song Contest with her rendition of Superstar. This was no great surprise, it was a dreadful song.

I believe she was chosen to represent her country as a political ploy, to demonstrate that they have embraced modern European life and would be perfect partners in the European Union.

Sibel gyrated in her micro mini see-through gold wisp of a dress, her arms adorned in tattooes, hardly the usual stereotype Turkish woman.

But it was not enough to win votes, Lordi had those, the Finnish monster group that defied the traditional route of Abba lookalikes, smarmy ballad singers and traditional folksy numbers, all which made an evening of hilarious, naff entertainment.

Then there was the totally inexplicable acts that defied belief; Germany’s jaw dropping entry as cowboys is what I have in mind here.

It seems Iain was gripped and ran a live-blog for fellow fans. He provided a fairly accurate assessment too, though I suspect it was pure patriotism that led him to speak so glowingly of the UK’s dismal entry.

Now Finland have broken the mould, I’m wondering how other countries will respond next year, what will follow in their footsteps ……

  1. Sibel would have looked more traditional in her native despangled belly dancing costume.

    She was no Turkish Delight!

  2. Mel – if the song was meant to have a Turkish nationalistic flavour, why didn’t Sibel dress in a costume which reflects her country’s national dress?

Francoise – I agree with your point about the USA and Mexico. I’m not in favour of Turkey joining the EU, but who would have thought that former Soviet bloc countries like Lithuania and Latvia would have joined.

Turkey’s chances of joining the European Union are zilch … nul points…s.f.a. They can parade as many tatttoo’d ladies as they want, it won’t make a ha’peth of difference. What’s the point of a European Union that keeps expanding till it takes in everyone from Rekyavik to Vladivostock? The USA could solve its illegal immigration problem at a stroke by uniting with Mexico. Are they going to? Of course not. The USA is just right as it is, as far as its citizens are concerned. A great big money-machine with a lot of poor people just over the border. Turkey is our Mexico and we will keep it the way it is.

  4. I’m not sure about the Turkish song trying to win the European vote. Our Swedish commentator said the song had apparently originally been written in English but Turkish tv wanted it to be sung in Turkish to make it more national rather than adapt it to the more western sounds that dominate the competition now days.

  5. I see Bill has been here supporting ‘Lordi’ as well… [sigh]… you know my views on last nights show…

I don’t bother with football so I’m not remotely interested in the World Cup I’m afraid to say and if I was I certainly wouldn’t be supporting England… its the wee green and white army all the way ~ Northern Ireland!

Your comments about the recent political mess which is the government, I must say where interesting although the Conservative Party arn’t without their own scandal in the past?!

However, as Head Boy of the first Integrated school in Northern Ireland I recently met your new leader, on his travels. He was very impressive and it is refreshing to find a politician who actually seems committed to issues such as Fair Trade and Global Debt Cancellation. I hope the public give him a chance at the next election… to be honest I don’t think he could do any worse than Blair!

    Thanx again for you comment,

  6. Bill, Sibel does have a fan club on her website if you are interested, and it also sells a range of her next-to-nothing clothing that you so admire.

The Eurovision voting is always a conspiracy and is part of the fun, watching each country support its neighbours.

  7. The Turkish entry clearly deserved to win. As we all know, musical talent plays no part in the battle for votes at Eurovision.

Those tattoos, couple with all that bare flesh – a conspiracy was definitely at work to prevent her victory.

  8. Yes, I wondered about that re Turkey. Thanks for your comment on my blog. Nice to make your acquaintance. :)
