The true human suffering behind an Italian tomato

Next time you open up a tin of Italian plum tomatoes, do bear in mind the true price in human suffering that could have been involved.

This article brings tears to the eyes, it was written by a brilliant undercover journalist posing as an immigrant worker, and he exposes the horrific and cruel suffering inflicted against them – as well as murder.

Fortunately, Sicily Scene blogger Welshcakes Limoncello (pictured) tells us that arrests have been made as a result. I shall certainly be bringing this to the attention of my MEP Robert Sturdy, I know he will want to stamp out this kind of barbaric slave labour.

  1. We are definately not sheltered from it here in Oz. Its going on everyday perhaps not as to the extent, although i do recall a few cases very similar :(

  2. It seems that we are “sheltered” here in Australia. Although there was a police raid on brothels for sex slaves from Thailand.

I did read that this too is goin on from eastern europe to the west as well…

  3. Ellee, it’s not only in Italy that this is happening, I’m afraid. You may want to get hold of Jason Webster’s book, “Andalus”. The book is not all on this theme but in the opening chapters he tells of a similar situation in Spain.

  4. Simon, I thought Italy was much more civilised than this. I’ve asked Welshcakes Limoncello to keep me informed about arrests and further developments.

  5. gawd! I just read it! Its a disgrace.
