Archer’s lost shepherd returns to flock
Posted by Ellee on Feb 13, 2007 in updates | 10 commentsI expect Bryan Applyard will sleep happier tonight knowing that the Archer’s
stolen sculptures have been recovered following a sensational overnight swoop by police at a Cambridgeshire village.
The boys in blue turned out in full force, with eight police cars swarming to the recovery scene with flashing lights and spent five hours there. I didn’t even know we had that many police in my county! I just hope it was a quiet night crimewise in the rest of the patch.
I often spy the bronze naked shepherds and sheep on the Archer’s manicured lawn when I pop into the neighbouring Orchard Tea Gardens in Grantchester, my favourite summer hideaway where I flop into a deck chair under an apple tree and let the world pass by.
Maybe the thefts will give Lord Archer inspiration for a new book, the thieves might even want to apologise. However, I don’t expect Lord Archer will be sitting on the jury when they face trial, we can guess what his verdict would be….

Isn’t that interesting in the light of the Englishman/Wayne’s revelation that sometimes only four or five policeman are on duty on a shift in some towns. Yet dozens can descend on Jeffrey’s thieves.
I do like the sculptures but as for the Archers [NOT the radio 4 ones!] – I don’t care for them.
Good to know they are in their rightful place; they can’t really be anywhere else.
Simon, You are absolutely right, of course, I was speaking tongue in cheek. But it didn’t stop him appearing on the TV programme, which many commentators have picked up on.
Gurthrum, I’m just wondering how the police could justify sending 8 cars to retrieve a couple of stolen statues, as well as nick the villains, it really is beyond belief. I don’t think they are much slower out here in the Fens.
Hooray! I hate it when I hear of works of art being stolen or vandalised, even if they are not to my personal taste. Art is what distinguishes us from animals, I.M.O.
I spotted that Ellee , it would have been better if he had been the subject of a long and devious con based around the invention of fictional person.
I was hping they were going to turn out to be fakes
Maybe he’d met them before.
Belmarsh for example.
I doubt Archer will be on the jury… I thought convicted criminals couldn’t take part?
I only just saw these sculptures for the first time , when Geoff and i walked to Granchester and went to The Orchrad for Tea and cakes.
I really liked the Sculptures , so i am glad they are back where they belong…..
Eight cars !! the man still has got pull, however they still are nice sculptures
