Italians can "shame" adulterers

Welschcakes Limoncello portrays a vivid account of Sicilian life on her blog, including this recent judgement from Italy’s Supreme Court of Appeal which has decided that no time limit can be put on a betrayed spouse’s hurt and anger.

It is the case of a man who in 1999 discovered while reading his wife’s diary that she was having an affair with her brother-in-law and planned a prolonged campaign to “shame her”, threatening her and sending letters to her teaching colleagues.

He received an eight month sentence for his behaviour, later reduced on appeal to defamation only. The latest hearing in the Supreme Court of Appeal concluded that if your wife cheats on you, you have the right to “shame” her.

Surely the time comes when enough is enough, is the court’s decision condoning his behaviour and allowing it to continue indefinitely? And would it have reached the same decision if a woman had been the wronged partner?

Will country lover Robin head for Brussels?

The European Parliament won’t know what’s hit it if outspoken Robin Page - former One Man and his Dog presenter - is asked to step into the shoes of UKIP’s MEP Tom Wise, currently suspended over allegations of financial irregularities.

Last November Robin threw in the towel as a South Cambridgeshire councillor after 35 years, blaming political correctness and his denial to the right of free speech. He is very much in the same mould as Clarissa Dickson Wright.

Robin is next in line on UKIP’s list and said: “If it becomes necessary and I am asked, I will serve the remaining two years of Tom Wise’s term as an MEP.â€?

I can promise you that Robin is one of those characters who once seen is never forgotten. He was defiant to the end, arriving at his last meeting wearing a green waistcoat covered in sheep to remind everyone of his “baaingâ€? like a sheep throughout a meeting when Lib Dem councillors voted in unison.

He is very much a passionate country man at heart, I visited his farm a few years ago when I took my sons to see the reindeers he brought in at Christmas.  I just wonder if he will be a fish out of water in the quagmire of Brussels bureaucracy, can he be sure that he find his free voice there which was denied him in South Cambridgeshire? What will be dress up as if he wants to poke fun at other MEPs?

Why does our 1966 World Cup football have the initials YG on it?

Shouldn’t our winning 1966 World Cup football be regarded as a national treasure? You would surely not expect that anyone would be allowed to scribble on it.

Well according to Ed Vaizey, that is exactly what happened, and the culprit was Yuri Geller. Cultural vandalism or what? he asks.

Ed describes how the football was brought to the House of Commons, along with other treasured relics, from our museums - and how he was stunned when he discovered the letters YG on it.

“We are also invited to be photographed with Geoff Hurst’s ball - the one which won us the world cup.  It is damaged - but not from the match.  Apparently the Germans nicked it and kicked it around in Germany before they gave it back.  It rattles, as the bladder has long since shrivelled up inside.  Best and most hilariously of all, I noticed the initials YG written in felt tip on the ball.  I asked what this signified.  Apparently, in 1996, Yuri Geller was called in to help give the English team luck in Euro 96, and he wrote his initials on the ball!  Cultural vandalism or what?  If this is wrong Yuri, please tell me, as I don’t want to be sued by you.  But that’s what I was told.  Amazing.”

I have just checked my copy of Geoff Hurst’s autobiography and there is no mention of footie loving Yuri in it, I’m sure Geoff would be appalled, he must surely know about it.

Yuri did his best to help England’s chances, placing crystals on the turf, sadly, it did not do the trick. Does that surprise you?

I’m wondering whether the ball can be cleaned at all, what are your views about Yuri’s initials on our national treasure? Did you know about it?
