"the average British family spent more than one-third of its income on food. This has now dropped to less than one-tenth."

Alas Elle that's the problem with averages
If one third of your income goes on food
If one third of your income goes on rent
If one third of your income goes on bills

It is no good telling these people that the other half, including farmers - spend less than a tenth of their incomes on food - they already know there are people getting paid lots more dosh than they are getting.

The problem with farming subsidies will be and has always been that it benefits more those with more land, and often doesn't reach the small farmer in equal measure.

Now I hear there are going to be no more (land) set aside subsidies from the EU - because more land is needed for farming - can't see any problem there, can you.
I wonder how much will end up as developed land

The whole idea of green belt, and set aside was to preserve the countryside, not just to subsidise land until it was worth more - but hey that is exactly how some people viewed it.

Government "support" is the problem with farming, not the solution. Government needs to get itself out of the agriculture business completely. Unfortunately this is not possible because of the EU.

Ellee: Over here in the U.S. we've had :Farm Aid" since 1985 due to deplorable conditions where farmers were losing their farms in foreclosure due to bad weather, no crops and many more economic factors. Only 2%? Wow, that is an amazing statistic!

It's true that farmers are not the folk who just get milk and hay anymore. It's a vital business.
