Perhaps allegations of forcing people to work as sex slaves or prostitute should be taken more seriously more quickly, and prosecutions for violent 'pimping' punished harder.
If there were more money for a rapid reaction task force, I'd be happy to do the 'night' shift.

Most councils/police forces in the UK turn a blind eye to Brothels trading openly as things are.

Regulating them will presumably create jobs for 'brothel inspectors', complaints from punters would range from cases of overcharging to the passing on of STI's.

In terms of the trafficking, we'd be better to do away with this silly notion that foreign criminals have 'human rights', that's why they laugh at us so much.

I bet the Saudi's don't have a problem with the Russian mafia.

"We need to end the practice of recruitment into prostitution, and the demand for pay-as-you-go sex which drives the market"

That's not sex trafficking. That's consensual prostitution. That's about people choosing what they want to do with their body. Comparing that to slavery is madness.

What right does Dr Carrie Pemberton think she has to go telling people what they can and cannot choose to do with their bodies?

Of course legalising didn't lower the trade in Amsterdam. That wasn't the point. It was to make it a more regulated and safer trade. By licensing, it drew a wedge between people working consensually, and those in slavery. Which meant that spotting those was a lot easier (the Dutch police come down hard on those without a license).

Banning it all simply means filling up more prisons with harmless people and still being unable to identify those freely giving consent and those not.

I agree with what Carrie says: the full implications of licencing brothels have not been thought out and it could even make the situation worse.

I am in favour of legalisation of the trade too. Just like Germany, Sweden, Holland and many other countries. To pretend that somehow the oldest profession in the world can be stamped out is not a defensible view.

If it was legal and taxed, extortion from the women would be much harder to do.

I've never been able to see the difference betwen selling your body, selling your muscle power or selling your mind, if each contract is entered into freely. Tis coercion that is evil. If a woman is forced into prostitution, that is a crime. But if a woman chooses to be a prostitute, then the state should stay well clear. I fear the Bishop has more good sense that your esteemed Dr P.
