I would hope that someone I love would care for me. I know alzheimers regress back into childhood, so I'd worry about being a burden.

For me, this post also brings up the debate about euthanasia again, Ellee.

I empathise with Fiona's plight, and agree with what you say, 100%, Ellee. You know that I have been there myself, and the caring relative is often as much a victim of this terrible disease as the sufferer.

Caring is what family is for, is it not ?

If we made sons and daughters or partners 'paid carers' would we not be abrogating family responsibility by effectively suggesting that it's the State's (taxpayers') duty to foot the bill at every turn of our lives ?

If so - how can we complain about high death duties or the Big Brother State ?

I say less taxes and pare back public services to basics - then carers could afford to care.

A great deal of hardship and misery is caused by dementia, and a great deal of rubbish is talked by those with no actual experience of the situation.

The financial support given to carers in this country is a national embarrassment. We treat them like forgotten citizens.

I cannot believe someone would be so heartless like that Baroness Whoever! My mother died from Alzheimers and my father cared for her all those years at home. Except for times when she had to be hospitalized. And then when he had 2 massive strokes, he was left with vascular dementia before he finally passed away. We were able to put my Dad in a wonderful care facility where he felt totally at home. Dementia of any kind is a vicious disease of the brain, not something that one brings on themselves. I'm horrified!

Not everyone is fortunate to give up work to care for ailing parents. I seen one blogger post that dementia and alzheimers can be prevented and it was basically at the sufferers own doing that they have these conditions . This of course is not the case and the writer took umbrage when this was pointed out as being ignorant of the real facts. Baroness Warnock sounds like a stuck up old tart.
