The story of vanishing Dunwich
Posted by Ellee on Jul 21, 2010 in Uncategorized | 6 commentsMy walking buddy Heather and I found ourselves making a return visit to Dunwich Museum at the weekend, captivated by the story of how this once thriving town, or even a city, had vanished into the sea, helpless against the force of the crushing waves against its crumbling cliffs. We had visited it last two years ago, and I can still remember being told as a child about the church bells that still ring from below the sea. It was such an evocative and powerful image.
The story is a reminder of how vulnerable our coastline communities are, and I used my 4G iPhone to record a brief video outlining the Dunwich story which you can view here:
And here is the trail which Heather and I enjoyed. How much longer it will be there remains to be seen ….

Very interesting. I’d never heard this story before.
I recall that Dunwich was the location in a short horror story named ‘The Dunwich Horror’.
Sally, you must visit the museum next time you go. I look forward to seeing you and Geoff on Friday too.
Flowerpot, we must meet there one day
disaffected, I didn’t have time to visit The Ship, but it looked really nice. Your children must have some lovely memories.
Yes, Aldeburgh is stunning, it’s so quiet and unspoilt unlike many other nearby resorts. I guess I’m showing my age!
When our chioldren were small we regularly stayed at The Ship in Dunwich , great days.
We now stay a few times a year in Aldeburgh .
The whole area is gorgeous , unspoilt and not crammed full of holiday tat like so many English seaside areas area.
I would like to retire there eventually and become grumpy old woman , eat tons of fish and chips , bacon butties and regular meals in The Lighthouse restaurant , bliss.
Plus there is a wonderful independent bookseller who gives great personal servivce ordering in anything you request , its like England 1940s was.
I’ve never been there but hope you enjoyed the walk ellee!
we go to Dunwich once a year with jesus green for a swim in the sea…. every year i think how lovely it would be to come back for a long weekend of walking..maybe one day we will
Looks like you had a fab time Ellee and look forward to seeing you on friday x
