In memory of those who are still missing. This is a local case for me, I remember reading about the mysterious disappearance of Debbie Steel, who ran a pub in Ely, Cambridgeshire with her former partner Brian McDermott. She vanished in December 1997 aged 37.
I remember police digging up the immediate area and scouring the neighbourhood. They also checked CCTV in Ely and on the London underground in case she had gone to visit family there. Nothing has ever been heard since she vanished, though one man reported a possible sighting of her at Ely railway station.
Brian still thinks of Debbie and wonders what happened to her:
“I’m reminded of Debbie constantly and still wonder what happened and why she went missing. It’s a limbo. I don’t know if she’s alive, but I do hope she is.
“I try to make sense of her disappearance, but we’re still looking for an answer. People ask about her and her dad visits from time to time and we talk, but none of us can come up with an answer.
“We’d just like to know what happened now.”
In memory of those who are still missing.
I’ve noticed fewer comments or none on these “missing” posts now, Ellee. This case is so sad like all the others but I hesitate to comment because I seem to be saying the same thing every time. I feel for each and every person and family involved.
Welshcakes, that does not concern me because I sometimes hear from the families of those I highlight in the sad and haunting cases I have written about, and they thank me for helping and taking an interest. I do it for them. I know these posts are well read, they are being read constantly, I know this from my stats counter. So please do not worry about the lack of comments, it is not important, the posts are being noticed.
I didn’t mean to imply they are not being read, Ellee, and I’m sure the families appreciate what you are doing. It’s just there is so much sadness in the world I do not know what to say sometimes.
Welshcakes, I do understand, that’s fine, I’m sure the families appreciate your support if they pick up on the link.
I knew Debbie for a longtime, and still think about what happened to her, I was just speaking about her which is why I googled her name and found this site. People should be remembered, welldone for keeping the candle burning. K
