My son David has been booked in at University College Hospital, London for a biopsy on 10 September. There are no facilities for me to sleep over, neither do they provide hostel accommodation, they recommended I find a local b & b or hotel.
They suggested I look one up on Google, but I thought I would ask here too. I also need car parking facilities, I have to drive David home as his face will be swollen after the op and he was sick on the journey home last time he had this done. The hospital is in Euston Road and I would be very grateful for any recommendations.
It is hoped the biopsy will give David’s consultant an idea about different drugs or treatment for his chronic osteomyelitis. His consultant says the hospital has world-class microbiologists, we have to place our faith in them.
The good news for David is that he has his first driving lesson next week. He can’t wait.
I fear I have no suggestions, but send along my good wishes.
I’m equally as useless but good wishes too.
Hi Elle, straight out of Google:
St Giles Hotel
Two thoughts, Ellee – neither really close but in the area:
1 – Have you considered asking if there is a room empty at 18 Doughty Street? Cheeky, but less impersonal than a hotel, and you are a contributor!
2 – I used to stay in The London Ryan hotel in Kings Cross Road some years ago. It was the only place with lots of free parking (40 spaces). That may have changed. 3 star.
Ellee
The Premier Travel Inn Euston has parking, and I know of no others with parking nearby. I hope all goes well
James
That last one was built since I last stayed in the area .

Hi Ellee – hope all goes well for David. No concrete suggestions – only that Travelodges are affordable and you always know what you’re going to get and they often do special offers that reduce their already pretty reasonable rates. There are several in central London – not sure if there’s one near Euston but it would be worth checking out. Also – UCH themselves might have some suggestions? Do they have a PALs there? It would be worth asking. All the best – hope you’re well, Kate.
Try the YHA they are on Euston Road between the hospital and Kings Cross.
The above seem good answers. I usually stay in Picadilly, but the hotel has just closed!
I can’t suggest anything but want to wish Davis all the best. What a good thing he has his driving lessons to look forward to.
Many thanks to you all for your brilliant recommendations, they were much appreciated, particularly Matt who helped facilitate a roof over my head at 18 Doughty Street. Iain Dale has kindly said I can stay there for two nights if needs be.
You`d think I would know one being so close but ..then again thats excatly why I don`t
Obviously I’m no help with a hotel Ellee, but I do hope everything goes well for your son.
regards
jmb
A ‘chronic’ condition – bless ‘im. I do hope all goes well and his recovery is swift.
I’ll say a prayer to the God I no longer believe in and keep fingers crossed.
Thank you again everyone. Thanks to the old reprobate for giving me a good chuckle, thanks to Kevin for his prayers, and it is so nice to hear from Kate again, a friend from Headway Cambridgeshire who has moved away.
If you are not staying in one of the big hotels wouldn’t suggest you stay in any of the local B@B’s. The area is very rough especially at night and many B& B’s are used by the authorities to house the homeless and vulnerable.
Suggest you accept the 18 D St offer. The area is nicer.
There are however many B’B near Tufnell Park tube station which is only 3 stops on the tube or the 390 bus stops outside the main Euston Station and the same at this end. Plenty overseas visitors stay around here. This summer we have seen many Americans and Japanese dragging huge bag.
The YHA is a nice place to stay if you don’t mind sharing rooms with tourists or paying the bit extra for a room of your own.
A lot of the cheap little hotels around Kings Cross area are scruffy. If you don’t mind what you pay go for the Novotel obviously.
Budget – YHA (you even get a cooked breakfast). Upmarket – Novotel.
I lived in a room above the Dun-ar-ree bar on Caledonian Road form 3 months one summer, just next to Kings Cross. The novelty of having a bar downstairs thats open until 2am and surviving on Kebabs wears thin after a while. They’ll give you a room of your own with a TV for £20 a night though.
On the other hand if you like to party you can’t beat the Generator Hostel – google it. You get a bed for £15 a night and it has a cheap with a late licence.
I would recommend the Holiday Inn LONDON-BLOOMSBURY, Coram Street, London WC1N 1HT. It’s not exactly on Euston Road, but it’s in the more salubrious environs of Russell Square (beside the tube station of the same name). I’ve stayed there before. If you’re staying on the evening of Sunday 9th September you should be able to get a Leisure Saver rate by clicking on the relevant box on http://www.holidayinn.co.uk
But during the week hotels in London seem to have got prohibitively expensive – I’ve got a meeting in Canary Wharf on Fri 7th September and I am struggling!
I would recommend the Holiday Inn as well! it was great for my family.
[…] I discovered at the last minute that there was a parent’s room available where I could spend the night, so I had no need to travel to 18 Doughty Street, and I am so very grateful for their kind offer as it gave me peace of mind in the run-up to David’s visit. […]
