I think I image have now heard it all. The election result just published for St Ives in Huntingdonshire has Labour coming a humiliating fourth after the Official Monster Raving Loony Party candidate Lord Toby Jug.

Lord Jug clearly impressed the electorate in ways which the two Labour candidates couldn’t. The two council seats were won by Conservatives in a sweeping victory, with Lib Dems second.

Lord Toby Jug, Cambridgeshire’s first Official Monster Raving Loony Party Candidate, was celebrating his best ever result in decades of political campaigning by winning 566 votes – well ahead of Labour’s two candidates who finished last.

“I am absolutely chuffed,” said Lord Toby, a musician from St Ives, in the Cambridge Evening News.

“People in St Ives have voted for the sanest candidate.

“I think it sends out the message that people in the community are dissatisfied with politics at the moment. The man in the street just doesn’t trust them any more.”

How much worse can it get for Labour? Gordon Brown will surely soon run out of MPs he can shuffle about for his Cabinet?
