Labour’s parliamentary candidate John Cowan, a former glamour model manager, is named and shamed for being expelled from the Lib Dems for sending “sexual” emails to female political figures.

Cowan is challenging Shadow Agriculture Secretary Jim Paice in South East Cambridgeshire; it is my constituency, in fact Jim knocked on my door this morning while out canvassing!

The Cambridge News reports that Cowan was thrown out of the Lib Dems in 2004 – and then considered joining the Conservative party.

A Lib Dem source who contacted the paper and spilt the beans said: “To say I was shocked when I saw John Cowan’s name in the paper standing as a Labour candidate is an under-statement. He was a Liberal Democrat until 2004 when the party eventually thrown him out”.

Reasons cited were that he sent “sexual emails” to a number of political female figures, which has been confirmed by David Allworthy, head of compliance and constitutional support for the Lib Dems. (what does this job title mean?)

Cowan is not at all shame-faced about this distasteful behaviour, saying: “I knew all of this would come out at some point, but it’s all in the past. I sent those emails purely to try and damage the Liberal Democrat party as I was adamant I wanted to leave and I wanted to get at them before I did. The emails were aimed at one thing only: to show the whole party up.

“Even though I’ve been a Liberal Democrat and discussed joining the Conservatives, I believe I’m a Labour man through and through.

“The emails were not sexual harassment matters. The sexual content was behind the scenes stuff about the party – the sexual, seedy side. I was all about transparency and wanted to show the hypocrisy of the Lib Dems.

“I’m standing to represent the views of local people and I have always had that political drive.

“It’s a spectacular own goal by the Lib Dems to bring this all up now. Besides, I’d decided to leave them before the disciplinary action took place, so I was hardly expelled.”

Cowan’s quotes beg so many questions about  the Lib Dems and “behind the scenes sexual, seedy stuff”. What does he mean? Who is he referring to?
