London’s burning no-go areas

As the terrifying violence and looting continues to sweeps across London into parts of Ealing and Croydon during a third night of unrest, here is some advice for the government’s Cobra committee when it meets today, courtesy of a Sky New blog comment:

It is way past time that the Government call in the military to enforce law & order on the streets. This behaviour IS just opportunist criminality and nothing to do with social justice. Those with nothing to hide need not conceal their faces from the Police and media cameras. A swift curfew should be introduced & everybody made aware that any criminal behaviour will be dealt with severely by the army. Enough is enough – our Police force already have a nigh on impossible task on a daily basis & this kind of incident only further hampers them from protecting the general public under English law.

While a curfew would be unenforcable, the police clearly need back-up as riots are  spreading to other parts of the UK, including Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool and it makes sense to call on our armed forces for support. If we have any left…..

And just imagine if this was happening one year ahead in 2012 during the Olympics, how would police and our already stretched emergency services cope then?
