David only had 15 minutes notice to prepare a speech for his 18th birthday, and I was so impressed by it that I put it on YouTube. As David spends so much time glued to his computer on social network sites, it amazed me for its fluency, confidence and humour. It was a real eye opener for me.
We went to Ascot for his birthday and took some of his close friends. As usual, only the bookies ended up winning on the day! We also had a party for family and close friends and this was when David made his impromptu speech, which only lasts a couple of minutes.
Couldn’t your finances stretch to a Rolly-Polly Gram ?
Lovely, heartwarming and funny speech. Well done David and congratulations Ellee on raising your son to be a confident young man – a rare sight these days!
Ellie, I didn’t realise David Miliband was your son!
A really brilliant speech!
Yes, there is a resemblence to our Foreign Secretary.
Kevin, David would have been terribly embarrassed at such a thing 😉
Iain and Jeremy, how funny, that had never occurred to me. I’m glad you liked the speech.
Thanks Audrie, I just wish I had David’s confidence at making public speeches. He must have inherited this from his dad.
Admin (Geoff), thanks for your help with this. You are one in a million. I know Sally agrees. 🙂
The best part about David’s birthday for me was when his friends who we took to Ascot later invited David out for dinner. They collected him, treated him, and then went to a pub afterwards. I love it when people show their appreciation and make you feel valued. I was so pleased for David that he has such good friends.
I just want to add that David’s reference to the new kitchen was because the old kitchen had just been totally refitted and I joked about making his 18th a joint party to celebrate the new kitchen to save on the hard work involved in throwing a good party.
What a great speech! And only in 15 minutes.
Even though it was funny i also thought it was very touching and brought a tear to my eye.
You must be very proud.
Casdok, yes, it did bring a tear to my eye. Most of all, I was so surprised, I didn’t realise he had it in him!!
Couldn’t you have … ‘panned’ round the kitchen for us, Ellee ?
🙂
Good speech. Great idea to have it preserved for posterity.
Congratulations to David both for his 18th birthday and also such a good speech.
It would have taken me about 15 minutes just to think of the first sentence.
He is seeming all grown up now. What a mixture of emotions parenting is. Fine speech, fine young man. (and I too would have liked to have seen the kitchen)
You must be so proud Ellee, that was a wonderful speech. I guess even on the computer he’s learning communication skills!
He’s a lot more interesting and a lot more funny than David Boyband. Brilliant!
‘Almost like a brother to me’ – very good!
Bravo Ellee
