“Plodcasting” hits Cambridgeshire

Switched on Chief Cons Julie Spence

Switched on Cambridgeshire police have started podcasting as a way to reach out to modern audiences.

In less than a week, more than 130 people have downloaded a four minute statement from Chief Constable Julie Spence about latest police statistics.

They are believed to be the first force in the country to offer postcasts; it was the brainchild of their web manager.

I wonder if they will try blogging so communities can switch info on hot local topics, that would really useful. I can just see the headlines though: “PC Plodcast” and “PC Blog”.

David Miliband’s latest challenge

Will David Miliband support British farmers?

The UK government is poised to hit our cash-strapped farmers even more.

Proposals have been announced today that will allow our government to divert up to 20% of EU income earmarked for farmers into rural development schemes.

This was personally proposed by Tony Blair at the end of his failed EU presidency in Decembcer 2005.

I am a big lover of the countryside and everything green and rural, but our farmers are among the most environmentally minded in Europe. Making them lose out for this reason is unnecessary.

My MEP Robert Sturdy is very naturally angry about it and has challenged David Miliband, who has been out and about visiting farmers, to support the needs of our farmers on this. This is a chance for him to prove himself.

This crazy proposal makes British farmers disadvantaged competitively as other EU countries will be diverting smaller amounts of their income, resulting in cheaper imports.

It has to be approved by the European Parliament and Conservative MEPs may challenge it in the European Court of Justice if it goes ahead.

Farmers are still reeling over their incompetently delayed single farm payment - now this. Let’s hope we don’t have a drought which will cause them further hardship, or rain everyday. Just a little bit of each.

They must love their work to put up with all these uncertainties.

My early morning dip

My 15-year-old son David is on study leave at the moment, preparing for his 10 GCSEs. He seems pretty laid back about them.

It means he is around the house all day and pops in to my study where I am always beavering either at my work or blogging.

In my pre-blog days (hard to remember them now), I often started the day with an early morning dip at my gym. It’s difficult to recall the number of times I have done that since starting this blog in February.

So as David is keen on fitness, he insisted this week that I put my swim before my early morning blog. I did that today and it has totally disrupted my morning.

I returned home ravenous and tucked into a mountain of Marmite sandwiches, which defeats the whole object of going as I have just lost a stone and can fit into my favourite pink Capri pants again (see pic during hols to North Norfolk) - once the sun comes out.

My priority then is to catch up with my paid work, but I get twitchy if I haven’t posted by 10am - it is now past 1pm.

How am I going to achieve a life balance around blogging? I also need to practise the clarinet daily too and this gets neglected. It’s a tough one.
