My rhubarb lasagne recipe request from Canada

Scott eating haggis, but dreaming of my rhubarb lasagna

Who could have imagined that a quirky post about my rhubarb lasagne would have aroused so much interest - and globally too!

I was a fresh faced blogger when I described how I threw together this pudding for my friend Scott, an American airforceman living in my Cambridgeshire village, before he headed off for promotional training in the States prior to an assignment in a very undesirable area, possibly Iraq.

Scott has now returned from Alabama and is visiting relatives in Canada. This evening, I received this amazing email from a woman who, it transpired, had heard of my Domestic Goddess culinary skills over the pond as a result of my blog. She was, it transpired, Scott’s aunt, but did not immediately realise our connection:

Hi Ellee
The world is very small with the internet available everywhere.
Last evening we were visiting with my nephew who mentioned he had tasted a wonderful Rhubarb Lasagne and so when I got home I did a search for the recipe and came upon your blog site.As I was reading it I thought there was no way that this is one and the same Scott that you were referring to.We had coffee this morning and I mentioned that I couldn’t find the recipe but that there was 1 mentioned in a blog from Uk.I asked him if he had taken a doggie bag home with him and soon discovered it was one and the same Scott. He was quite shocked that I would know this so I had to tell him where I got the information from.He filled us in as to how you met etc.
He is visiting only until Tues. and then back to UK and on to posting possibly Iraq.
I would love to have the full recipe as Rhubarb grows “wild” here in Medicine Hat meaning you don’t plant it as it grows in everyone’s yard.It can take over a large area of garden if not controlled.
I would really appreciate a response to my request as I love cooking but need complete recipe. As well Scott’s brother Steve is possibly coming in July and would love to make this for him as well.
I will also mention that when I did search your site was first to come up so pat yourself on back on a super site very well done.
Hope to hear soon

I am now emailing the recipe to Auntie Carol, hope Scott enjoys it again. Here it is for others who would like to try it:

Boil up some rhubarb with sugar, place a portion in a cooking dish with lasagne on top, then add more cooked rhubarb and lasagne. Finally, add custard on top and flaked almonds and cook in the oven for 30 mins or so. It is so easy to prepare and for some reason, people find it very exciting.

It’s amazing how this recipe has gripped so many’s people’s imagination - and tastebuds! One person emailed me and said it sounded very erotic. People still ask me if it’s for real. Well it is, and it’s scrummy, as Scott will tell you, and a few select others…

My mention in The Tribune magazine

I feel greatly privileged to get a mention on Iain’s list of top Tory bloggers, being ranked 9th out of 20th. This is amazing considering I only started blogging four months ago afer meeting up with Geoff in Cambridge one night.

The list, as well as bloggers Iain recommends from other political parties, will be published in The Tribune magazine next week. He reckons there are 120 or so Tory bloggers compared to 80 Lib Dems, but far fewer Labour for various reasons.

Thanks Iain, and many thanks again to Geoff for making it all happen for me.

My proud mum bit

Award winning James with his football manager

If it hadn’t been for the World Cup, I wouldn’t have been posting about my sports mad son’s achievements over the last couple of days. But as footie is a hot topic at the moment, here goes.

James, 13, is a very modest lad, not in the slightest bit boastful, and wouldn’t make a big deal about this, but I would like to do my proud mum bit. Yesterday was his football club’s annual awards presentation and he won two top prizes, including Players’ Player of the Year, highly coveted because this was voted by members of his team of which he is captain.

He also joined a local youth cricket team which has never won a match, but he is very loyal to them. James is a pretty average player, but last week he tapped into an inner reserve and seemed unstoppable, batting brilliantly, scoring a continuous run of fours, and finally totalled 43 runs. It was a nail bitingly tense close game, and disappointly they lost by only 1 run. He was given a hero’s applause and won their Man of the Match and a signed miniature bat sits proudly on the TV.

However, I am now hopeful of a few wins this season having recruited a couple of his strong footie friends to sign up for cricket; they look so handsome in their whites. I will keep you posted.
