Where were the great British designers?

This is the snazzy winning logo which beat off 1,700 others to mark the 50th celebrations of the European Union. It was designed by Szymon Skrzypczak (pic), from Poland.

It very cleverly picks on different type faces from different countries - I guess the UK is represented by the very arch and angular T from The Times, it denotes the very stiff British upper lip.

But why didn’t any UK entries make it through to the finals? Whatever your views about Europe, it would have been a great opportunity for us to showcase our creativity.

Some of the talented art and desing student finalists came from Latvia, Slovakia and Lithuania, our nearest finalist coming from Ireland. Will leading international companies be seeking to source their inspirational and cutting-edge designs from these new European countries instead of the UK?
I doubt there will be much enthusiasm from the UK for any EU celebrations next year. Martine has pointed out that the EU fears ridicule and is scaling down its plans. A mooted Eurovision-style singing competition, and plans for EU-wide dancing in the street and an EU marathon have discreetly been dropped. I can hear you all breathing a huge sigh of relief, but you are not let off completely, you can instead gear yourself up for:

  • Eurovision-style song contest
  • Dancing in street
  • EU marathon
  • Tree-planting campaign
  • European film festival
  • Festive voyage by boat calling at ports from Finland to Greece

I would have thought some European football matches would have been a good idea, but then maybe not, it is just as divisive as uniting - just like politics and religion!

Dell investigates my nightmare laptop

Six weeks after describing my nightmare laptop which has been bad news from almost day one, Dell has picked up the link and contacted me.

It is now out of warranty, is still overheating and cutting out and we have added an exterior keyboard as that packed up too. Yet it has hardly been used and still looks brand new, a totally different experience to my workhorse Dell desktop which I bought around the same time and has never let me down.

This is the message I received yesterday:

“My name is John, and I am a customer advocate at Dell headquarters in Round Rock, Texas.

“I apologize that it took us so long to find this, but I would be happy to look into the details of your case for you. If there is anything I can do to help I will be happy to do it.

“Please send the service tag from your system and anything else you think may be helpful to the email address I provided while leaving this reply. To ensure it is properly routed, please include my name in the subject field on the email.

“I look forward to hearing from you!”

I look forward to hearing from you too John. Geoff has reminded me about a few problems Apple is having at the moment and seems to be handling badly, in fact their Macbook problem sounds very similar to the one I experienced.

These leading companies should never get too big for their boots, their reputation relies on providing solid, reliable products and good value, along with customer satisfaction - without that, they are doomed.
