If only that was all it took for a happy marriage – choosing a date with a triple row of magical 7s to tie the knot.
When covering numerous golden weddings as a cub reporter, I always asked the secret of their wedded bliss and the answer was invariably the same – you have to give and take.
Of course, most women knows this means that we do the giving and the men do the taking!!!
Anyway, let’s wish Desperate Housewife star Eva Longoria and hubby to be Tony Parker all the very best when they tie the knot tomorrow, along with thousands of other superstitious couples desperate for wedded bliss. I suppose starring in such a show has made her desperate not to leave anything to chance.
At the end of the day, there are never any guarantees, it’s not luck that counts, or a row of of triple-7s, but commitment, mutual respect and kindness to each other – plus the ability to throw in a few surprises to thrill and exhilarate.
Long live love, long live marriage.
Your formulae for a good and happy marriage are spot on, my articulate and wise friend. And no, I don’t think a row of 7s will do the trick.
When I was a cub reporter and doing wedding write-ups we used to assess the potential duration of the marriage based on the cost of the wedding. The greater the expenditure the less chance it had for survival. I don’t know how scientific it was, but in a number of cases we proved to be absolutely right.
Cheers,
Ian
Ian, I should have added having a few laughs together. Life has so many burdens, it’s good to throw them off from time to time and be free spirited.

Ellee , Basically if you are to achieve a long marriage you need to realise its not all a bed of roses .
Posssibly the most enduring are those not based on mad passion ” great fun but sadly not lasting”
And Ians comments regarding expenditure are certainly in my case correct,
We had 20 friends and family at ours ,and a lovely ” DO ” in my brothers garden ( 80 in the shade )and 32 years later are still bumbling along .
I am off to a wedding tomorrow. A great couple who will be fine. i hope the rain stays away for once.
Georgegirl, how true, life probably has more challenges and difficulties to overcome than being a bed of roses.
Cityunslicker, I send best wishes to your friends too. A thought has just occured to me. If 7 is such a wonderful number, why do some people get the 7 -year itch?
as in any relationship or just being alive I think you need a good sense of humor and a reliable sense of the absurd.
It will most likely help if she keeps that outfit!
Alas weddings are so passe –
But yes, an ideal wedding will be on a weekend or better still a bank holiday weekend, so that more wedding guests can come and from further away …
and even though we live in the air-conditioned age, one would still ask for a lovely day whether in June, April or May.
As it happens the seventh of July turned out to be one such day – an ideal wedding day.
I just forgot to invite the bride – lol!
And I saw her only a few days ago at Don Pascuale’s in the Market Square.
In hndsight, I would have put more emphasis on making an informed choice – just jumping in and optimism is not nearly enough to start with 🙂

Ellee – I’m currently in Bulgaria teaching the CIPR Diploma and was informed that there were 117 weddings here in Sofia on the magical 7/7/7 day.
As one married for 46 years you’d think I’d no the secret, but no. I have no idea why one marriage lasts and another doesn’t. Often it’s a mystery.
I had no idea that 7/7/7 was considered a lucky day to get married, but lets wish all of those who married yesterday the best.
Choosing to spend their first night up in a tree cabin in the most remote area in Brittany was something quite anti-star.
Geoff’s son is getting married on 20/07 2007 which I thought was rather cool 🙂
i was wondering who the pink dress is made by. it is so beautiful.
