The European Parliament won’t know what’s hit it if outspoken Robin Page – former One Man and his Dog presenter – is asked to step into the shoes of UKIP’s MEP Tom Wise, currently suspended over allegations of financial irregularities.
Last November Robin threw in the towel as a South Cambridgeshire councillor after 35 years, blaming political correctness and his denial to the right of free speech. He is very much in the same mould as Clarissa Dickson Wright.
Robin is next in line on UKIP’s list and said: “If it becomes necessary and I am asked, I will serve the remaining two years of Tom Wise’s term as an MEP.â€?
I can promise you that Robin is one of those characters who once seen is never forgotten. He was defiant to the end, arriving at his last meeting wearing a green waistcoat covered in sheep to remind everyone of his “baaing like a sheep throughout a meeting when Lib Dem councillors voted in unison.
He is very much a passionate country man at heart, I visited his farm a few years ago when I took my sons to see the reindeers he brought in at Christmas. I just wonder if he will be a fish out of water in the quagmire of Brussels bureaucracy, can he be sure that he find his free voice there which was denied him in South Cambridgeshire? What will be dress up as if he wants to poke fun at other MEPs?
Robin would be a very vocal speaker in Brussels, and not let diplomacy get in his way. Good for him!
A nasty little homophobe who likes the sound of his own voice!
Justin, tough words, I have no idea regarding the homophobe side.
Hi Elle, on this one I must say that it has always been a source of humour, that the best way to ensure a place in the EU Parliament is to ‘oppose’ the EU.
Yet clearly the EU is a wealth of opportunity for resources for the unemployed, resources fir training and education, resources for business and innovation (job creation) and of course subsidies for farmers, to keep basic or ‘general’ food prices semi-affordable.
Is there any conservative MEP who is against the EU community per se (other than the usual suspects) and is keeping the pound more an issue of ‘national pride’ or ‘historical independence’ than real opposition to the other benefits of greater EU co-operation and integration.
I guess from the previous post the Britain & the EU is a little like an analogy for buying a house with a stranger. In a society where ‘increasingly’ two incomes are necessary to secure a mortgage on a shoebox, and where divorce is about dividing assets, the value of homes being the principal asset. Then arranged home-buying partnerships are just another form of bussiness partnership or arranged marriage, without the personal (or emotional ties) – and quite a practical stepping stone whilst looking for an ‘ideal’ partner to share a home and bed (or life?) with.
Single people are certainly being dicriminated against by the high price of homes. But the ability to pay (or not) is the highest form of prejudice par excellence – we’ve focused so much on removing all other forms of prejudice, we’ve ignored the one from which all proceed, or the one in which all ‘effectively’ culminate
albeit working in a subliminal or subconscious state
The whole thing about mocking councillors in the same political party for voting together was pathetic. Whatever next, all footballers in the same side shooting the same way ? If he went to Brussels, would he expect UKIP members to vote against each other ?
Nobody “shut him up”, he said things that were uncalled for, given his position. With power comes responsibility and it should always be used wisely. Anyone can be a loudmouth or rabble rouser.
