Following Lib Dems appalling results last night, will Tony Blair be the only party leader to step down shortly? Or will he be followed by Menzies Campbell, who has failed to inspire anyone with his leadership?
Last night’s results were a great stepping stone for Conservatives. My local authority in East Cambridgeshire had a major triumph with Conservatives winning eight seats where they are now the ruling party for the first time in its history.
I heard a defiant Ming on the radio this morning saying that he was determined to stay on as leader and lead his party through the next general election and into victory. That kind of delusional talk is great news for Conservatives, let’s hope he does stay.
And let’s hope Lib Dems were also given a drubbing in the York area too where Julian Sturdy was getting supportive feedback on the doorstep. The result will be known later today.
What were your results? Do you feel Conservatives are now back on track and heading towards a victory in the next general election?
Ellee – I think it would be just brilliant if next week Blair was to announce that he is staying put. Just imagine the headless chickens running round everywhere. His performance with Catherine Tate in Comic Relief could come in handy – as he says “face, bothered” to all the media. Gordon would be sucking his cheeks in annoyance… and we could proceed to a proper election rather than having a self-perpetuating oligarchy.
1. Yes, the Conservatives will probably win the next election.
2. I agree with Heather. I don’t think Blair will step down just yet. Being a narcissist, it’s not in his nature to give up leadership.
I don’t think Blair will step down until the EU treaty is voted on in June: https://elleeseymour.com/2007/04/23/robert-and-the-eu-treaty/
However, he could make his announcement before then to allow time for a leadership campaign so his departure is timed for the summer hols.
I think that Labour are heading towards a richly-deserved loss in the next election – which will, by dint of the UK’s outdated electoral system, mean that the Tories are heading for an outright victory.
I think Ming knows the game is up. There is a route for him to withdraw without loss of face by citing health.
I have my fingers crossed that he won’t. Then we may start to pick up Lib Dem MPs defecting (but should we accept them ?).
If the Lib Dems had campaigned honourably in my area then I would feel sorry for them. But due to their behaviour I believe they are unfit for public office.
Hi Elle,
no significant change in Cambridge
But only a third of the voters came out. Means Labour still has a lot in reserve. If they pulled their finger out they could win some wards back from the libdems in Cambridge – once Tony Blair is gone.
Congrats to conservatives wrestling a majority from the lib dems in East Cambs.
libdems are really caught sitting on a fence.
They try to be socialist in conservative areas, and conservative in labour areas. I think its called being in two minds or having a split personality.
Poor old Ming – so charming and well-meaning and probably just too nice for the job. Nobody here believes Blair is going to go!
Unfortunately, our area is a Labour one, but those are the ones to try and win.
Thing is Ming is a Liberal. Most of the rest of them are lying lib-dems. There is a huge difference and I think people are waking up to the fact that the latter group will say anything to get elected.
Great results in East and South Cambs, Ellee
The caretaker would not even have got the job if they were not in such disaray. Ming is just not up to it, then again you could say that makes him the perfect man for the job.
