The contract for my mobile
phone comes up for renewal soon and I would like to swap it for either a Nokia N96 or Apple iPhone.
I always kicked myself for not getting the Nokia N95 when I had the chance, and now it has been improved on with this slick little beast which has an impressive 16gb memory. The N96 also downloads BBC iPlayer, has a 5.0 megapixel camera and a pretty cool built-in GPS, as well as a web brower.
But now I have an Apple MacBook, I love Apple. Should I be brand loyal and would it be advantageous to have a model which is totally compatible to my laptop? It has pretty much the same features as its competitor, but cannot download BBC iPlayer - yet. Maybe soon? Should that influence my decision? However, I have heard it can’t always pick up a great connection.
A big plus for the Apple, which looks stunning, is that I can book one-to-one tutorials at their Cambridge store and be shown how to use it fully which would be really helpful as these phones are virtually hand-held computers.
Decisions, decisions. And I imagine I won’t be the only one faced with this choice either.

Buy the Nokia. I am as big a Machead as anyone, but the new iPhone is rubbish. I am without my contacts and diary half the time because the “push technology” doesn’t work.

If you have the time, spend a lot of time using each mobile. I think your choice will be easy after a couple of hours with each.
Both are very powerful; one is a feature rich phone, the other is a new, soon to be dominant, mobile platform with thousands of apps.
Depends on your functional and security needs.
Have fun and choose well!
Sounds like a difficult decision. Enjoy whatever you choose.
I too am looking to upgrade my phone. I am looking at a couple of Samsung models and think I have just about chosen
Good luck with your choice
How about the Blackberry Bold? That’s the new big one.
I have an iphone and I am very happy with it. There are a few things that are annoying e.g no task synch, no ability to set calendar colours manually (or sync them with ical) and the app store is a big pile of cr*p (no decent apps on it, to be honest). I am sure all of these will be fixed in time….
By the way, was any councils around your way hit by the Icelandic collapse? Colchester lost £4m - 20% of its annual budget.
It’s good living in East Anglia again…
Hi Ellee,
Don’t rule out the HTC Touch Pro. Touch screen, GPS but the bonus of a slide out proper keyboard. Met someone with one who loves it for twittering.
The main thing is what you want the phone for. I think the iPhone may be better for music and media, but for other things, the Nokia may be better.
Get the prettiest one, Ellee!

I go along with Tim. Look at the HTC.
Apple is certainly a good product. We have the Mac at home and its perfect for communication and entertainment i.e. media.
The same is said for the I phone. However its more like an Ipod with phone application than a Phone with other applications.
Having said that, I chose a New Nokia E72 which is more for email, and communication. camera function and MP3 players stuff is not not what I need!
I guess its horses for courses!
Thanks for the feedback. I like my phone to have a good camera as I do use it. I think the Nokia phone even has a built in flash.
I haven’t used my phone for emails - yet. Mainly because I don’t like the buttons on the phone I presently have. It would be good to have a sat nav too. I just hope all these applications are easy to understand for a novice.
I hadn’t thought about HTC, it looks very sleek.
I think the Nokia has the edge at the moment. I will have to try them both out in stores before I finally decide.
As far as I’m aware, the iPhone doesn’t have turn-by-turn sat nav at the moment. Nokia have Maps which is a subscription-based application.
As you’re a walker, I can also tell you that there’s a bit of software for tracking your position, so if you go for a walk somewhere, it can log your GPS positions, which you can then plot.
Hi Ellee,
I have a similar decision coming my way soon… I was taken by the iPhone butnow one of my so-called friends has muddied the waters by mentioning the Sony Ericsson X1 http://www.sonyericsson.com/x1/ - I now have a choice to make and he is now an unpopular git!
Best of luck with YOUR choice… I’ll let you know in the new year which one I get.
Mike
Hi Mike,
I hope you find some of these tips helpful too. I shall check out the Sony Ericsoon as well. It makes it more complicated for me if I have four models to choose from.
I hope to catch up with you soon at Toastmasters.
lol Elle,
spoilt for choice?
aaargh nothing is perfect.
Why is it one is always better at something, and the other at something else. I guess life is a COMPROMISE.
But life does almost beg for something that is definitely & comprehensively superior.
The only problem is there is always something better coming up just around the corner.
I guess as with marriage, we all need to learn to be happy with the choice we make (or made) rather than wondering whether we made the right choice.
I have the same proclem choosing my next car. They all have four wheels plus the steering wheel and a ’spare’ - but should I go for a ’sporty’ two plus two? or
will little Etta feel that she has been left out? (no room for kids) -lol!
Q9, I did almost feel like a spoilt child when I was writing this, that’s how consumerism makes you feel sometimes. But we have to keep up with new technology. These phones are getting smarter and smarter - but are we smart enough to keep up with them?
My son pointed out to me this morning that I had misbranded the Nokia N96 by calling it a Nikon N96 - and nobody noticed! So I have just corrected it.
I had a peek at the phone Mike recommends and it looks really good. If Tim or Jeremy could recommend any particular HTC models, I would like to check them out.
I guess we all knew you meant Nokia - lol
Apple has better graphix but it cost 900 one way or another, the Nokia hopefully will cost one third and with no ties.
Q9, thanks, I had a laugh about it too. I am a big Nikon fan too and have one of their cameras.
